Tips for Choosing a Portable Bidet
What Is a Portable Bidet?
In-home bidets come in all shapes and sizes, from simple sprayers and attachments, to bidet seats and bidet toilets. While any of these bathroom additions will improve personal hygiene at home, they’re not much help when you’re away. That’s where portable travel bidets come in! These compact units fit discreetly in a purse or backpack so you can enjoy a hygienic cleanse wherever your adventures take you.
Types of Portable Bidets
Portable bidets fall into three categories: bottle cap, handheld and battery operated. Each has a long, angled nozzle that allows you to wash off your nether regions without getting your hands dirty. Bottle cap styles consist of a long spout attached to a cap. It either inserts or screws into a standard size bottle opening, such as a 20 oz plastic water bottle. Simply fill the bottle with water, attach the bidet bottle cap, and you’re ready to wash off.
Handheld bidets have a small water reservoir crafted from a flexible material. Squeezing the reservoir forces water to come out the nozzle, letting you control the strength of the wash stream. Some handheld styles have a button that releases the water at a constant rate, but many users say that they still need to squeeze the bottle to get adequate water pressure.
Unlike bottle cap and handheld styles, battery operated bidets do the bulk of the work for you. When you press the button, the bidet shoots a stream a water out of the nozzle — no squeezing required. This style often uses AA or AAA batteries, although some rely on button batteries. A few feature rechargeable batteries and come with a USB charging cable.
Many battery operated styles offer multiple wash options. For example, the TOTO Travel WASHLET runs on a single AA battery and offers regular and soft wash modes. Each wash mode has multiple spray settings that allow users to vary the intensity of the wash stream for maximum comfort. This compact model is just over 11″ when fully extended but collapses down to roughly 5″ x 2.5″ x 1.75″ for easy transport.
How Do You Use a Portable Bidet?
Using a portable bidet is pretty straightforward. To start, fill the bidet’s water reservoir at the sink. After you’re done using the toilet grasp the bidet in one hand, flip the bottle upside down and point the nozzle towards the area you want to clean. (If your model has an air lock valve, you’ll want to put your finger over it before flipping the bottle). Then, take your finger off the air lock and either squeeze the bottle or press the button to release a stream of water.
Getting the spray angle just right can take practice, so here are a few tips if you’re just getting started. To wash off after a bowel movement, reach around from behind and point the nozzle directly at your rear. To clean the genitals, position the bottle between the legs so that the water sprays from front to back. Once the wash is complete, simply pat dry with a few squares of toilet paper.
Portable Bidet Pros and Cons
If you’re thinking that a bidet on-the-go sounds too good to be true, you’re not alone! Customers often wonder how well portable styles perform compared to other types of bidets. In short, the more features a bidet has, the more comfortable and convenient the cleanse will be. In other words, an electric bidet provides a better overall experience than a non-electric bidet (like a portable bidet, attachment or hand held bidet sprayer). Similarly, a battery operated portable bidet delivers a more deluxe cleanse than a handheld or bottle cap style.
Nevertheless, a quality portable bidet can still get you clean! And water cleansing, no matter the type, is always more hygienic than using toilet paper. The best way to avoid disappointment is to expect a bit of a learning curve. After a few washes, you’ll probably have the hang of using your portable bidet.
As handy as they are, portable bidets aren’t a good option for everyone. Using a portable bidet requires many of the same physical motions as wiping with toilet paper. If wiping is difficult for you, using a portable bidet probably will be too. For example, anyone with muscle weakness may have difficulty grasping, maneuvering or squeezing one of these small units. This is especially true of bottle cap and handheld styles since they require the most manual dexterity. Additionally, portable bidets may be tough to use if you cannot comfortably twist or reach, or if you are significantly overweight.

Tips for Choosing a Portable Bidet
Wherever and whenever you need to wash up, a portable bidet has you covered! But with so many models out there, how do you find the right one? Here are a few considerations to bear in mind as you browse the options.
- Capacity
The amount of water a portable bidet can hold varies from model to model. We looked at a variety of popular options and found that their capacities ranged from 130 mL to 1200 mL. The majority held 500 mL or less.
In general, handheld portable bidets have bigger water reservoirs than battery powered styles. With a bottle cap style, you choose the size of the water container. They typically fit well on 20 oz (590 mL) disposable bottles, so that’s what many people use. - Size
Portable bidets come in a range of different sizes and configurations. Some are compact but broad, others are slim but long, and still other have a collapsible design or a retractable nozzle. A foldable style is handy if you’ll be carrying your portable bidet in a purse or briefcase. If it’s going in a suitcase or backpack, size may not be as big of a consideration. - Nozzle Size & Design
In general, the longer the nozzle, the easier it is to reach all parts of your undercarriage. Nozzle design also varies from unit to unit. Some battery operated portable bidets have adjustable nozzles that allow you to customize the spray angle. In contrast, the spray angle on most handheld and bottle cap styles can’t be changed. - Price
Most travel bidets cost under $80, with some of the simplest styles retailing for as little as $10-20. Bottle cap and hand held models are the least expensive, while battery operated bidets cost a bit more. Many also come with a travel bag for discreet, hygienic transport. Overall, expect to pay $30-50 for a mid-range model.
