What tools do I need to install the TOTO Neorest RS?
The TOTO Neorest RS includes all the parts required for installation, but you’ll need to have a few tools on hand:
- An adjustable wrench
- A Phillips-head #3 screwdriver and/or driver bits
- A flathead screwdriver
- A drill with a 3/16” bit
- Tape to hold the template in place (we like to use painter’s tape)
If you purchase your Neorest RS from us, it’ll come with a standard wax ring. If you’d rather use a Better Than Wax toilet seal like the one we use in our installation video, you’ll need to purchase it separately. The Better Than Wax toilet seals include toilet bolts, so if you’re using a different type of wax ring, make sure your existing bolts are in good condition or buy replacement bolts at your local hardware store.
Pro Tip: We’re drilling into wood for our install, so a standard 3/16” drill bit is perfect for the job. If your install requires drilling into concrete or tile, you’ll need a larger drill bit so you can use the anchors included with the RS. You may also need a specialized bit made for concrete or tile.
Setting Up the Water Supply
TOTO Neorest toilets come with a proprietary water shutoff valve that needs to be set up before you get started with the rest of the install. You’ll need a ½” female NPT connection in the wall so you can install the shutoff valve that comes with the RS. We highly recommend having a licensed plumber handle this step – whether you take it from there or have them do the rest of the install while they’re there is up to you!
If you want the water supply to be hidden behind the toilet, it should be installed about 4 ½” off center and about 6 ⅞” off the floor. The distance from the floor has a little more wiggle room, but you’ll want to be pretty spot-on with the 4 ½” horizontal distance.
Once the water supply is good to go, you can start installing your RS!
Step 1: Prepare the floor
- Line up the included template with the toilet flange and remove the perforated portion.
- Square the template to the room and walls, flatten it down and tape it in place.
- Using the appropriate drill bit for your flooring type, drill holes in the four marked locations at the back of the template (behind the toilet flange).
- Once you’ve drilled all four holes, remove the template.
Step 2: Install the flange adapter
Pro Tip: If you choose to use a drill instead of handheld screwdrivers throughout this installation, start with the torque set very low and slowly increase as needed so you don’t crack or damage any of the parts.
- If you’re replacing an existing toilet, clean the toilet flange to remove any residue from the old wax ring.
- Better Than Wax seals come with their own toilet bolts, so if you’re using one, set the bolts into the slots or holes on the toilet flange, then place the holes on either side of the Better Than Wax seal onto the bolts. If you’re using a standard wax ring, center it over the toilet flange between the existing bolts (or new ones if you decided to start fresh).
- Center the flange adapter over the toilet flange and slide the bolt holes over the bolts. Place the washers onto the bolts and thread the nuts onto the bolts without fully tightening them – you just want them to be slightly snug for now.
- Set the hex bolts into the indentations on either side of the back of the flange adapter and slide the metal brackets over the bolts.
- Using your drill and Phillips-head driver bits or handheld screwdriver, mount the screws through the holes next to the hex bolts. (We like to go back and forth between sides so the pressure stays even.)
- Once the screws are secure, fully tighten the nuts you threaded earlier in this step onto the bolts using your adjustable wrench. Stop when they’re snug – overtightening can crack the flange adapter.
Step 3: Install the toilet base
Pro Tip: If you have someone available to lend a helping hand, now is a great time to ask for an assist in lifting the toilet base onto the flange adapter!
- Set the toilet base over the flange adapter, lining up the bottom side of the porcelain with the rubber gasket on top of the adapter and the holes in the back with the bolts at the rear of the adapter. It should fall easily into place once it’s properly lined up.
- Thread the brass connection from the bowl onto the threaded end coming straight out from the shutoff valve.
- Slide the washers onto the toilet bolts and secure the toilet to the floor with the nuts, finishing with a few turns of the wrench. Again, these should be snug but not overly tight so you don’t damage the porcelain.
Step 4: Place and secure the top section
- Set the top onto the toilet base, making sure the plastic hook at the front clips into place.
- Thread the long bolt with the washer and stationary wingnut through the hole on the left side at the back of the toilet (if you’re facing the toilet) and hand tighten.
- Thread the long bolt with the washer and knurled (textured) edge on the head through the hole on the right side at the back of the toilet and hand tighten, then give it a couple of turns with your Phillips-head screwdriver.
Pro Tip: The bolts at the back of the top of the toilet are designed to have some give. This is so you can lift the top of the toilet for easy cleaning using the button on the left side. Just push the top down so it clips back into place when you’re done!
Step 5: Connect electrical and water
Pro Tip: The electrical connections are all unique, so you don’t have to worry about plugging them into the wrong place.
- Attach the three electrical connections on the left side of the toilet by sliding them together until they click into place.
- Gently push the cables and connections into the cavity on the left side of the toilet top.
- Thread the silver water connection onto the threaded end of the shutoff valve that points straight down (perpendicular to the floor).
- Thread the manual flush cable through the hole on the left side of the toilet top. The end of the cable should sit in the hole with the ring hanging out to the left.
- With your flathead screwdriver, turn the screw in the water shutoff valve counterclockwise to let water into the unit and check the connections for leaks. If there are any leaks, turn the screw in the water shutoff valve clockwise to turn off the water and make sure the connections are properly secured before reopening the valve.
- Plug the power cord into a GFCI outlet. You should hear the toilet start running through its initiation process.
- Snap the plastic side panels into place on either side of the toilet base by connecting the magnetic strips.
Pro Tip: The water connections are designed to attach to specific ends of the shutoff valves. If they’re connected to the wrong ends, you’ll have lots of leaks!
Step 6: Set up the remote control and test the RS
- Install the remote control batteries by pressing the button on the bottom of the remote and lifting the battery compartment cover up and off. Insert the two included AA batteries and replace the battery compartment cover by snapping it down into place.
- To test the bidet functions, press down on the pressure sensor at the back left of the seat (near the seat hinge). When the sensor is activated, you should hear the PREMIST feature run.
- Press a wash button on the remote to test the wash, being sure to cover the spray with your hand or a container.
- Press the Stop button on the remote or simply remove your hand from the pressure sensor to stop the wash.
If the wash runs properly, you’re ready to enjoy your new premium bidet experience!
