What’s the Difference Between Instant and Tank Bidet Water Heaters?

Bidets with instant water heaters warm the water instantaneously when you start a wash. The strong but streamlined heating coil continues to heat the water for as long as you run a wash, so the warm wash never runs out. Some bidets that use instant water heaters have a small burst of cold water before the water gets warm. This cold spurt comes from the water that remains in the line between the heater and the nozzle after each use. This burst tends to last only 0.25 to 0.5 seconds – short enough that most users won’t even notice it. But once the water is warm, it stays warm for the duration of the wash.
In contrast, bidets with warm water tanks store preheated wash water in a reservoir at the back of the seat. As the tank empties, a heating coil begins to warm more water. Tank heaters usually provide a finite amount of warm water, so you’ll typically only enjoy a relaxing warm wash for 30 to 60 seconds before the water cools. (A handful of tank heater bidets offer unlimited warm water, but they’re not as efficient or sleek as those with instant heaters.)
While bidets that include instant water heaters come with a higher price tag, they’re still our most frequently purchased bidet style due to their benefits and high-end features. They’re a great option if you want a stylish upgrade that will pamper you for years to come!

Yes – bidets with instant water heaters run on electricity and cannot be used with batteries. You will need a dedicated GFCI outlet near the toilet (typically within four feet) or be able to run an extension cord from the bidet to a protected outlet.
Because instant water heaters warm the water in real time, they need to be powerful enough to keep up with the wash. Due to this, the pull on the line can be rather high while they’re in use – typically between 13 and 14 amps. While it’s a good idea to have all electric bidets on a 20-amp dedicated line, this is especially important for bidets with instant water heaters.
We find that bidets with unlimited warm water tend to last just as long as – if not longer than – those that use a tank water heating system. Because many bidets with instant water heaters are higher-end products, they often use better components and feature an overall higher-quality build.
Tankless water heaters can be susceptible to mineral buildup in the water line. In most homes, this buildup takes many years to become a problem. However, if you have hard water, this buildup may accumulate quicker and cause issues with your bidet. If you’re concerned about this or just want to protect your investment, we recommend using an inline water filter.
