Kohler’s Novita BH-90/93 comes in white while TOTO’s S550e WASHLET comes in both cotton white and sedona beige, making the S550e compatible with a wider range of bathroom color schemes.
The TOTO WASHLET S550e has two trim options, classic and contemporary, that allow you to pick a seat that best complements the rest of your bathroom. The classic trim features a beveled edge, and the contemporary trim has a smooth edge. The Kohler Novita BH-90/93 comes in only one trim that features a smooth, non-beveled edge.
While the TOTO’s WASHLET S550e comes in two colors and two trim styles, it only comes in the elongated size. If you’re looking for a bidet seat that will fit a round toilet, then Kohler’s Novita BH-93 is for you. Kohler’s Novita BH-90 and BH-93 are identical in every way other than that the BH-90 fits elongated toilets and the BH-93 fits round toilets. However, if you’re heart is set on a TOTO unit, the good news is that the TOTO S350e comes in round only and offers the same features as the TOTO S550e.
The S550e WASHLET comes with TOTO’s special connect+ system that keeps unsightly cords and hoses hidden from view, while the Kohler Novita BH-90 does not.
The Kohler Novita BH-90 & BH-93 comes with dual nozzles whereas the TOTO S550e has a single nozzle. In a dual nozzle system, the nozzles are a little off center, and only one of the two nozzles actively sprays at a time. In a single nozzle configuration, the sole nozzle is centered. Neither configuration is necessarily better than the other, and the choice comes down to personal preference. We prefer the centered nozzle of the TOTO S550e.
What TOTO’s WASHLET S550e’s single nozzle does have is an adjustable spray width that offers a wider or narrower cleansing spray depending on your preference. The Kohler Novita BH-90/93’s spray is static and not adjustable.
The Kohler Novita BH-90 and BH-93 have a turbo wash feature that provides a significantly stronger water stream for extra thorough cleansing after particularly messy bowel movements. The TOTO WASHLET S550e does not have this.
While the TOTO S550e WASHLET doesn’t have a turbo mode, it does offer PREMIST and aftermist. PREMIST and aftermist are standard amenities that come with any TOTO bidet product, and it involves spraying EWATER+ to help keep debris from adhering to the toilet bowl. PREMIST automatically coats the bowl with a thin film of residue-repelling EWATER+ before use, and aftermist activates 25 minutes after the last use.
Both the Kohler Novita BH-90/BH-93 and the TOTO S550e WASHLET sterilize their nozzles regularly but have different methods of doing so. TOTO uses electrolyzed water (EWATER+) to accomplish this, and Kohler utilizes its silver nano technology.
As far as water flow is concerned, the TOTO S550e WASHLET is slightly gentler and has a range of 0.8 – 0.11 gal/min. The Kohler Novita BH-90’s water flow is mere fraction stronger with a tiny bit wider adjustment of 0.10 -0.14 gal/min.
The remotes for both models offer a sleek, modern feel with a touchscreen and optional wall-mount. The only difference here is that the TOTO WASHLET S550e’s remote is double-sided. A very simple, easy menu of buttons to adjust the basic amenities is found on the remote’s front, and the advanced settings are accessed through a menu selection on the back. The remote for the Kohler Novita BH90/93 has all the controls on the front.
Once programmed, the TOTO WASHLET S550e allows two presets. This allows you to save settings for yourself and one other person allowing both of you to get a fine-tuned, personal cleansing at the press of a button. The Kohler Novita BH-90/BH-93 doesn’t offer user presets.
The TOTO S550e’s bidet seat remote beeps to indicate that a button has been pressed. While this is usually helpful for new bidet users and for troubleshooting, some users get tired of hearing the beep each time they select a setting. For an extra layer of discretion or to remove a potentially irritating noise, the TOTO WASHLET S550e allows the remote’s beeping to be muted. The Kohler Novita BH-90/93 does not offer beeping at all, giving you less feedback from the remote from the get-go.
The Kohler Novita BH-90’s nozzles are far easier to remove than most models on the market. They have threads that allow the tips to be conveniently twisted off for deep cleaning or replacement. Unfortunately, the nozzle tips of the TOTO WASHLET S550e have to be removed at a TOTO facility. This is an important consideration for any potential buyer with hard water, as sediment builds up in the narrow tip of the nozzle first, potentially leading to clogging. Being able to replace the nozzle tip allows the seat to offer a longer life span for those with hard water without having to send the seat in for repair.
There’s only a small price difference between the TOTO S550e WASHLET and the Kohler Novita BH-90/93. The true differences lie in the convenience features and wash options offered and which of these choices are most desirable depending on your needs and preferences.
The differences between these two models are vast even though the prices aren’t all that different. When it comes to choosing the right bidet seat, the TOTO S550e WASHLET has a lot to offer even though it is the least expensive of the two. However, the Kohler Novita BH-90/93 offers easily removable nozzle tips which is hard to refuse if hard water is a factor in your decision.
