As the similar names imply, these two models are very much alike with only two differences. First, TOTO’s S550e comes with a lid that opens and closes automatically. This feature makes night time visits to the restroom more convenient and can be useful during flu season, but it’s not a crucial component of any bidet seat. In comparison, users must manually open the TOTO S500e’s lid by pressing a button on the unit itself, which gets the job done more cost effectively than the 550e’s automatic open/close lid. This leads to the second main difference, price. Due to the additional bit of hardware in the automatic lid, the S550e comes in at a slightly higher price point than the S500e. Whether that small step up in convenience and comfort is worth the extra cost is entirely up to you. Both models are great examples of TOTO’s WASHLET+ suite of products, and either choice would elevate any bathroom.
