Both the TOTO Neorest NX1 and the TOTO Neorest AC are top tier units designed to provide users the highest level of quality and luxury available on the market. Though they’re very similar in terms of their features, there are a few key differences that are important to consider when deciding which is right for you.

Looks & Mounting

The Neorest NX1 is one of TOTO’s most luxurious looking models to date, featuring rounded edges and a minimalistic silhouette that lend contemporary elegance to any bathroom space. It’s a floor mounted toilet and requires a 12-inch rough in, which means there needs to be 12 inches from the center of the drain or flange to the back wall.

Just like the NX1, the TOTO Neorest AC looks every inch the high-end unit that it is. This wall-hung unit gives the illusion of hovering mid-air over the bathroom floor, and it’s compact, boxy shape and sweeping, ultra-modern lines are guaranteed to instantly amp up the style quotient of any bathroom. In addition to looking fantastic, a practical benefit to a wall-hung unit is that it takes up quite a bit less space than a traditional floor mounted toilet, making it an ideal choice bathrooms where space is tight.

Self-Cleaning

One of the primary differences between the TOTO Neorest NX1 and the TOTO Neorest AC lies in their self-cleaning capabilities. The TOTO Neorest AC features a special state-of-the-art self-cleaning technology called Actilight, which uses UV light, in combination with the unit’s special CeFiONtect glaze and sanitizing electrolyzed water (EWATER+), to break down waste particles left in the bowl. This keeps the unit cleaner longer and reduces the frequency with which it requires manual cleaning. While the TOTO Neorest NX1 has the CeFiONtect glaze and EWATER+, which act to discourage residue from sticking to the bowl and sanitize the bowl and wand after, it doesn’t have the Actilight self-cleaning system.

NX1 Upgrades

While the TOTO Neorest NX1 and the TOTO AC are functionally very similar, it’s worth noting that some of the basic features on the Neorest NX1 have been redesigned to enhance comfort and improve performance. The contours of the NX1’s seat, for example, have been updated to provide greater support and stability. In addition, the NX1’s bowl features a cutting edge, rimless design that makes it easier than ever to keep the bowl clean by eliminating anyplace for germs or dirt to lurk. Finally, TOTO reconfigured the NX1’s Tornado flushing system to provide an even more forceful flush that targets areas of the bowl that are most likely to attract residue. Taken together, these seemingly small tweaks add up to a notable difference in unit comfort and cleanliness.

Summary

If you’re working with a small bathroom space and want the best features on the market today, including self-cleaning technology, the TOTO Neorest AC may be the unit for you. On the other hand, if space isn’t an issue and you want a unit with a high level of style and a wide variety of features, including design upgrades to some of the unit’s basic elements, we’d suggest giving the TOTO Neorest NX1 serious consideration, keeping in mind that it doesn’t offer the Actilight self-cleaning system. While we see Actilight as being a nice feature, we wouldn’t call it a necessity, so it’s up to you to decide whether the NX1’s lack of self-cleaning technology is a dealbreaker or not!
