Remote Control Bidets vs. Side Panel Bidets

No matter which type you choose, you’ll reap the benefits of bidets for your health. But remote control bidets have some additional perks when compared to side control bidet seats.

Accessibility

If you’re dealing with mobility challenges or back pain and have difficulty twisting or bending, a remote control bidet seat is the way to go. Operating a control that’s handheld or mounted next to you is much more comfortable than turning to operate a side control. And if you’re left-handed, the right-sided location of the side-arm controls may make operation awkward.

Privacy

Wireless remotes also enhance privacy and independence if you’re a caregiver or help a loved one in the bathroom. You can control the bidet from a distance – or even from another room with a radio frequency remote – to assist in cleaning up while maintaining dignity. Side panel bidets don’t offer this flexibility since they can only be operated from the seat itself.

Hygiene

Side panels place the bidet controls directly in the toilet’s “splash zone,” increasing the potential for germ spread. Plus, kids or guests may use the side arm as a support when standing up. This can cause cracks over time, giving bacteria a place to hide.

Aesthetics

Since they don’t have any controls jutting out of the side, bidets with remotes can pass for a traditional toilet or toilet seat. They offer all the bidet functionality you want without detracting from your bathroom’s design.

How to Choose the Best Remote Control Bidet

Connectivity Options

Bidets with remotes give you two different connectivity options: infrared (IR) and radio frequency (RF). Infrared remotes may not work as well in small, dark spaces or around objects, though some bidet seats have a second IR receiver to boost reliability. 

Radio frequency remotes have a robust signal that works with any bathroom configuration. They can even control the bidet from outside the bathroom, making them ideal for caregivers looking to maintain privacy and dignity for their loved ones.

Remote Styles

Bidet remotes come in a variety of styles to accommodate your individual needs and preferences:

Slimline: These streamlined remotes have labeled or illustrated buttons that control the bidet functions. LED lights often indicate which level or option is selected. These remotes vary in appearance, from traditional options that resemble a TV remote to modern bar styles.

Remotes that use LED light indicators tend to be the sleekest, most modern-looking options. However, their compact size and smaller buttons may not be the best choice for users with dexterity issues. 

Screen: As indicated by the name, screen-style remotes have a screen that displays the bidet’s active options. Screen-style remotes show you the currently selected functions and their levels in a graphical way.

While screen-style remotes clearly denote your selections at a glance, the need to accommodate a screen means that the buttons tend to be smaller. Those with limited dexterity may have trouble manipulating this type of remote. The small screens can also present  challenges for those with low vision.

Panel: Panel-style remotes are large, simple to use and often have LED lights to make it easy to see what’s being selected. When mounted to the wall, they feel more like a control panel than a remote and tend to look like permanent wall fixtures. 

If you or your loved one have vision or dexterity challenges, panel-style remotes are an ideal choice. The larger buttons are easy to see and can be operated using body parts other than hands.

Dual-Sided: These remotes feature a double-sided design that puts basic controls front and center while placing more advanced features on the reverse side. Most dual-sided bidet remotes use LED indicators to show the selected options.

Dual-sided remotes give you detailed control over all the features of your bidet – perfect if you really want to customize your experience. But since the front of the remote only displays the basic options, guests may miss out on the full array of features if they don’t know to flip the remote over to access more settings. You’ll also need to take care to not accidentally press buttons on the top or front of the remote while adjusting the options on the back.

Additionally, if you’re worried about dropping or losing your remote, dual-sided remotes may not be your best choice since you have to take the remote out of the wall mount to use the buttons on the back side.
