Are TOTO Bidet Toilets Made in Japan? | Bidet Answers with Dan
Are All TOTO Products Made in Japan?
For decades TOTO has been known for exceptional Japanese engineering, innovation, and quality. Because of this, many shoppers naturally assume every TOTO toilet, Washlet, and bidet seat is still made in Japan today. The truth is, that’s no longer the case.
TOTO now operates manufacturing facilities around the world, including Japan, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Mexico, and the United States. That doesn’t mean quality has declined, but it does mean the country of origin can vary quite a bit depending on which TOTO product you purchase.
Which TOTO Products Are Still Made in Japan?
TOTO still manufactures two of its premium Neorest units in Japan. Both the TOTO NX1 and TOTO NX2 are assembled entirely in Japan and are the most advanced units TOTO has to offer.
The NX1 is a stylish, state-of-the-art unit, with a sophisticated profile and advanced cleaning technology. Its unique shape not only makes it eye-catching, but it provides an incredibly comfortable seated experience. This highly customizable Neorest unit gives you superior comfort and convenience at the touch of a button.
Meanwhile, the NX2 takes things a step further with Actilight cleaning technology. By combining electrolyzed water with a built-in UV light system, the NX2 washes away waste with ease and prevents buildup of limescale and mold.
What About TOTO Washlet Bidet Seats?
This is where things have changed the most. At one point nearly all of TOTO’s Washlet bidet seats were made in Japan. Today, most models are manufactured in Malaysia or China instead. That includes well-known bidet seats such as the S5 and the S7A.
Much of this comes down to demand. As TOTO expanded globally, the company also expanded its manufacturing footprint to better serve different markets around the world. Producing products closer to where they are sold helps streamline distribution and reduce costs. So if country of origin matters to you, it is important to check the specific model before purchasing.
TOTO’s commitment to innovation remains the same regardless of where the item is manufactured however. The S7A for example, continues to be TOTO’s flagship Washlet seat. With features such as an auto open/close lid and auto-flush capabilities.
Does “Made Outside Japan” Mean Lower Quality?
This has not been our experience. TOTO still maintains extremely high quality standards across its global manufacturing facilities. Even products made outside Japan are built using TOTO technology, engineering, and production standards. In fact, TOTO has invested heavily in manufacturing facilities around the world, including major U.S.-based production facilities in Georgia.
Final Thoughts
While a select few of TOTO’s premium integrated bidet toilets are still manufactured entirely in Japan, a large number of TOTO Washlet bidet seats and toilets are now produced in other countries.
If owning a Japan-made product is important to you, make sure to verify the country of origin for the model you are considering. Regardless of where a unit is assembled though, TOTO remains one of the most respected names in the bidet industry thanks to its long history of innovation, engineering, and reliability.
