Bidet Seats for Colorectal & Gastrointestinal Conditions
Written By Hannah Ramsey | Created September 17, 2020 | Updated July 21, 2023
The right electric bidet seat can work wonders in alleviating the unpleasant symptoms of many gastrointestinal and colorectal conditions, including:
- Hemorrhoids
- Anal fissures
- Constipation
- Ulcerative Colitis
- Crohn’s Disease
- Celiac Disease
If you experience any of these, adding a bidet seat to your routine can help reduce the discomfort associated with going to the bathroom, increase personal hygiene and cleanliness, make it easier to pass hard stool, and get you clean after messy bathroom moments without any wiping. We delve into each of these benefits of using a bidet seat below, followed by specific bidet seat recommendations for several of the most common GI and colorectal conditions.
Bidet Benefit #1: Alleviating Discomfort
Electric bidet seats provide an aerated, warm water cleanse that soothes irritated areas and eliminates the discomfort of wiping with toilet paper. Almost all electric bidets feature front and rear wash modes for cleaning the vaginal and anal areas (some offer even more), along with adjustable water pressure and temperature so you can tailor the wash to suit your personal preferences. Additional options like pulse washing, which varies the wash stream’s pressure, and nozzle oscillation, which moves the wash stream forwards and backwards, further enhance comfort and relaxation. Many electric seats even come with a warm air dryer for getting dry after the wash cycle is complete. Depending on the seat, it can take several minutes to get completely dry, so if you’re in a hurry, you can always use a small amount of toilet paper to gently blot excess moisture from your skin. All in all, the wash and dry features that come standard on many electric bidet seats go easy on tender areas and encourage damaged tissue to heal.
Bidet Benefit #2: Improving Hygiene
Most Americans are accustomed to wiping with toilet paper after using the restroom, but what many don’t realize is that this isn’t the most hygienic or healthful option! Wiping, even thorough wiping, inevitably leaves behind small amounts of residue and bacteria on the skin. This can lead to itching and can further irritate damaged or sensitive tissue, as in the case of hemorrhoids or fissures. A bidet wash, on the other hand, gently and thoroughly rinses waste and bacteria away, resulting in cleaner, healthier skin that is less prone to itching and heals more easily.
Bidet Benefit #3: Relieving Constipation
While some colorectal and GI conditions cause diarrhea, others result in hard stool that’s difficult to pass. To help alleviate constipation some electric bidet seats come with a specialized enema wash that shoots a strong stream of water into the rectum to soften stool and create the sensation of needing to have a bowel movement. If this is too intense for you, running a warm rear wash (at full water pressure) on a seat with a stronger water flow rate, like the Cascade 3000, may be enough to stimulate the bowels and relieve mild constipation. Even the most sensitive individuals can relax tense muscles and encourage a bowel movement by engaging nozzle oscillation or pulse washing.
Bidet Benefit #4: Easier Cleanup
It’s no secret that Crohn’s, Celiac Disease and other similar conditions often result in messy, painful and/or prolonged bowel movements. The good news is that the right bidet seat can make all the difference in reducing discomfort and getting you completely clean without abrasive toilet paper. If frequent, loose, or lengthy bowel movements make you dread going to the bathroom, you’ll likely benefit from a bidet with lots of comfort features like unlimited warm water, pulse and/or oscillate wash options (for extra relaxation and greater cleansing coverage, respectively), and a decent water flow rate. Most electric seats also offer adjustable water pressure. This ensures a comfortable experience since there may be some days that you need an ultra-gentle wash to soothe soreness and others where you want a strong, efficient wash to get clean after a messy bathroom session.

Why We Recommend the Bio Bidet BB-2000
The Bio Bidet BB-2000 is a great option for anyone who experiences frequent constipation due to its powerful enema wash and wide range of comfort features. The BB-2000’s regular wash stream is firm, which many customers appreciate because it results in an efficient and thorough cleanse, but it may not be the right seat for you if you have hemorrhoids or a particularly sensitive rectal area.

While many bidet seats on the market only provide limited warm wash water the Bio Bidet BB-2000 has an advanced, hybrid water heater that generates unlimited, consistent warm water. In addition, the BB-2000 offers a heated seat that can be configured according to personal preference, plus a deodorizer that keeps noxious odors to a minimum. The BB-2000 also encourages healthy bowel movements via its gentle pulse (massage) wash and oscillating wash options, plus its powerful enema wash. - You want to be able to change the unit’s nozzles at home should they become clogged or corroded versus having to send the seat to Bio Bidet for servicing
Why We Recommend the Bio Bidet BB-1000
The budget friendly BB-1000 offers many of the same comfort and convenience options as the BB-2000, including a powerful enema wash. In addition, it offers the strongest water flow rate of all the seats recommended in this article, which results in an efficient and effective cleanse. That said, the firmer wash stream generated by the seat’s higher water flow rate means that this model isn’t the best option for individuals with hemorrhoids or significant sensitivity in the rectal area.
The other main downside to the BB-1000 is that it isn’t as feature heavy as most of the other seats recommended here. For example, the BB-1000 comes with a tank water heater that provides limited warm water (versus unlimited warm water), has plastic nozzles (versus higher quality stainless steel nozzles), and doesn’t feature a sittable lid, nightlight, or one-button wash and dry.
Wash & Dry Features
The BB-1000 is equipped with Bio Bidet’s patented enema wash that sprays a strong stream of water into the rectum to loosen stubborn stool and stimulate bowel movements, making it a natural choice for anyone experiencing frequent constipation. It also offers pulsing and oscillating wash options that can help stimulate bowel movements while relaxing tender tissue.
Remote Control
The BB-1000’s large, panel style remote with generous buttons and intuitive layout makes it a great option if you have dexterity difficulties or plan to operate the remote with your feet, and it can be mounted wherever is easiest for you to reach.

Why We Recommend the Cascade 3000
The Cascade 3000 provides a range of great features that leave you exceptionally clean, all while increasing comfort and convenience in the bathroom. While the Cascade 3000 does not offer an enema wash, it does come with a robust water stream that can be adjusted in pressure from soft to firm. Running a rear wash on the highest pressure setting—or while utilizing nozzle oscillation—can encourage the bowels to get moving, while using the lowest pressure setting ensures a gentle cleanse suitable for sensitive tissue.
Design Features
The Cascade 3000’s sleek design makes it one of the most versatile bidet seats on the market. It is designed to fit on most one and two-piece toilets, including many with a difficult-to-fit French curve design, and it’s available in both round and elongated seat sizes. While most most bidets come with lids that cannot safely support the weight of an adult, the Cascade 3000 comes with a sittable lid that can hold up to 330 lbs. This is an especially great feature to have for anyone who likes to use the toilet lid as a seat while getting dressed, performing personal hygiene tasks, or helping someone bathe.
Wash & Dry Features
The Cascade 3000 features an instant water heater that generates unlimited warm wash water, an oscillating wash option that soothes tender areas and helps stimulate the bowels, and a built in warm air dryer that gets you dry without needing to wipe with toilet paper. For added convenience and ease of use, the Cascade 3000 comes with an auto wash mode that initiates a standard wash and dry cycle at the touch of a button, which is perfect for quick cleansing or for users who feel overwhelmed navigating the remote. It’s worth noting that the Cascade 3000 offers the longest auto wash/dry of any seat on the market, making it the best choice for thorough cleansing and drying at the touch of a button. The built-in LED nightlight illuminates the toilet bowl to make nighttime restroom trips safer and easier, and the automatic deodorizer reduces offensive odors to help your bathroom stay fresh no matter the situation.
Remote Control
The Cascade 3000 comes with two remote options so customers can choose what suits their needs best. The large remote features a simple, easy-to-navigate layout with raised buttons that are helpful for visually impaired users, those who have difficulty with fine motor tasks, or anyone planning to use their feet to operate the remote. A small remote with flat buttons and a display screen is also available if you prefer a sleeker look.

- Plastic nozzles (versus stainless steel or aluminum)
- Only available for elongated toilets (the TOTO S350e is a comparable option for round toilets)
- 1 year full warranty is shorter than most other seats on this list
You Might Choose This Seat If:
- You want gentle cleansing with lots of comfort options
- You are looking for the ultimate hands-free bathroom experience and would like the high-tech, auto-open lid
- You could benefit from the premisting feature to help keep the toilet bowl cleaner longer
- Multiple people will be using the customizable user presets would be helpful (versus an automatic one-button wash and dry option that reverts to the last used settings)
Why We Recommend the TOTO S550e
The TOTO S550e Washlet is a high-end seat packed with features that provide a truly luxurious experience. Highlights include four wash modes (the most of any seat on this list), premisting and nozzle sterilization for enhanced unit hygiene, along with user presets and an auto open/close lid for unbeatable convenience.
While the TOTO S550e is truly one of the most advanced seats money can buy, there are a few downsides. First, it’s one of the most expensive seats on the market, so while you’re certainly getting a long-lasting and high-quality product, it’s not particularly budget friendly. Second, it’s not the best option if you deal with frequent constipation since it doesn’t come with an enema wash and features a lower water flow rate. And lastly, the ultra-slim remote design may be a challenge for those with mobility and dexterity limitations to use.
Wash & Dry Features
The S550e comes with front, rear, wide, and soft wash modes, plus pulsating and oscillating spray options. The wide wash’s broad coverage is especially helpful in getting clean after a messy bowel movement or accident, and the soft wash mode is great if you have tender, sensitive skin. The S550e is also the only seat on this list to offer user presets, which allows up to two users to program their favorite wash settings into the remote. Do keep in mind that user presets only pertain to the wash cycle; you’ll need to start and adjust the dry cycle separately. This is a bit different from autowashing, which isn’t as personalized (it utilizes the seat’s last used settings) but does initiate a full wash and dry cycle with a single button press. Though the S550e’s single nozzle is crafted from plastic, which is less desirable than the stainless steel nozzles on the Cascade 3000 or BB-2000, the seat does come with a sterilization system that sanitizes the nozzles and bowl using electrolyzed water (Ewater+). Lastly, while no warm air dryer is “fast”, the S550e’s dryer is one of the more efficient ones out there.
Additional Convenience Features
The S550e features an automatic open/close lid that uses a sensor to open and close whenever someone walks towards or away from the toilet. You can also raise and lower the lid via a button on the remote, or just open and close it manually. The automatic options are nice to have if you would benefit from a hands-free bathroom experience or if you enjoy keeping up with the latest technology, but do be aware that customers with small bathrooms sometimes report that the lid opens and closes randomly (this is due to the way the sensor picks up movement in a small space). Additionally, before each use, the S550e automatically sprays the inside of the toilet bowl with a thin film of water to prevent residue from sticking. This helps keep the toilet little cleaner and cuts down on the time you spend scrubbing it.
Remote Control
The TOTO S550e comes with a slim remote in brushed silver with flat, illustrated buttons. While incredibly elegant, this remote can be challenging to operate if you have limited dexterity.

Pros:
- Seat supports up to 350 lbs
- Oscillating spray option
- Pulse spray option
- Adjustable water temperature, water pressure, seat temperature and nozzle position
- One button wash and dry
- Child mode
- Warm air dryer with adjustable temperature
- Silver Nano Technology nozzle sterilization
- Built-in deodorizer

Cons:
- Hybrid water heating system provides limited warm water (about 60-90 seconds)
- Nozzles don’t reach quite as far as the Cascade 3000
- No sittable lid
- Operated via side arm control panel, which doesn’t have the same level of accessibility as a wireless remote
- 1 year warranty is shorter than most on this list
You Might Choose This Seat If:
- You’re looking for a seat that’s got a lot of comfort features without the high price tag of the Cascade 3000 or TOTO S550e
- You want both oscillating and pulse spray options
- You want a seat with nozzles that can be replaced at home
Why We Recommend the Kohler Novita BG-90/93
While not as feature heavy as most of the other seats on this list, the Kohler Novita BG-90/93 bidet seat offers a lot for the price tag, including a range of comfort options that are well suited to hemorrhoid care. The BG-90/93’s water flow rate of 0.18 gallons per minute is comparable to that of the Cascade 3000, and the pressure can be adjusted up or down depending on your sensitivity level. In addition, the BG-90/93 offers both pulse washing and nozzle oscillation which are both great for relaxing sore tissue. Other highlights include autowashing (one button wash & dry), a deodorizer and LED nightlight, and nozzles that can be replaced at home.
Although it has many strengths, it’s worth mentioning that the Kohler Novita BG-90/93’s nozzles don’t reach quite as far as those on some other units, so it’s likely you’ll need to do a bit more shifting around to get a thorough cleanse. Additionally, the BG-90/93 has a hybrid water heater that uses both a water tank and an instant water heater. While this method provides very consistent water temperature, it only lasts for around 60-90 seconds. At that point, the seat’s water flow rate begins to exceed the instant heater’s capacity and the wash water slowly transitions from warm to cool. While the seat offers plenty of warm water for a standard cleansing cycle—and more than many tank water heaters—there’s always the potential that you’ll run out before you’re ready. Instead of a wireless remote control, the BG-90/93’s controls are located on a panel attached to the seat. While convenient, some users find that this setup is not as accessible as a wireless remote, Lastly, the BG-90/93 is on the smaller side, so it’s not quite as comfortable as seats like the Cascade 3000 or BB-2000. As long as you’re ok with these tradeoffs, the BG-90/93 is a good option to consider for improving personal hygiene and soothing hemorrhoids while keeping costs low.
