Tushy Bidet Review

Founded by entrepreneur Miki Agrawal in 2015, Tushy is a socially conscious bidet attachment and bathroom accessory company headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. The brand is known for their creative, edgy marketing as well as their efforts to raise public awareness around the health and environmental benefits of bidets. Through their give back partnership with Samagra Sanitation, Tushy donates money from every bidet sale to provide families in rural India with access to sanitary community toilets, thereby improving health and quality of life in those communities. Tushy also emphasizes the positive impact their bidets have on the environment, pointing out that their attachments use around 1.3 gallons of water in a week of use compared to the 55.5 gallons of water needed to produce the toilet paper one person typically uses in that same time period.

Currently, Tushy manufactures two non-electric bidet attachments that run on the power of your bathroom’s existing water pressure: the Tushy Classic and the Tushy Spa. Both models feature a self-rinsing nozzle along with adjustable water pressure and spray angle. They are also easy to operate thanks to the Tushy Classic’s single control knob and the Tushy Spa’s dual control knobs.

The two units differ when it comes to water temperature options. The Tushy Classic has a single water hose that connects to your toilet’s water source for a refreshingly cool cleanse. In comparison, the Tushy Spa has two hoses, one that connects to your toilet’s cool water supply and one that connects to your sink’s hot water line, resulting in warm wash water. Before ordering the Tushy Spa, it’s important to ensure that your toilet and sink are within 9 feet of one another as that’s the warm water hose’s approximate length. Tushy also sells accessories designed to complement their bidet attachments, including an ottoman that helps you assume a more ergonomic position while pooping, a handheld travel bidet, sustainable bamboo toilet paper, and a line of bamboo bath towels and “bum towels” (for patting dry after using the bidet).

Tushy advertises their bidet attachments as being compatible with all two-piece toilets, some one-piece toilets (excluding French curve toilets), and any bowl size. The attachment is installed between the seat and bowl of your existing toilet, and Tushy states that the process should only take around 10 minutes.

Features You Won’t Get with a Tushy Bidet

Because they’re not powered by electricity, bidet attachments like the Tushy Spa and Tushy Classic have limited amenities. A few of the bidet features you won’t get with a Tushy bidet attachment (or any non-electric bidet) that you could enjoy with an electric bidet seat include:

  • A built-in water heater – the Tushy Spa has a hot water line that you can connect to your bathroom’s hot water line for warm water cleansing, but this setup is a bit more complicated and unsightly than a bidet seat that comes with a built-in heater
  • A warm air dryer – a non-electric bidet means you’ll need to pat dry with either toilet paper or a towel
  • A heated seat – all the electric seats we sell have a heated seat with adjustable temperature controls
  • LED nightlight – many electric seats have a nightlight that illuminates the bowl with a gentle glow so that navigating the restroom in low light is both safer and easier
  • Deodorizer – many electric bidet seats have a scentless deodorizer that cleanses the air from the toilet bowl by pulling it through an odor-destroying filter
  • Versatile spray options, like oscillating and pulsating spray, wide spray, etc.

Potential Problems with Tushy

At this time, Many Bidets doesn’t carry the Tushy brand, so our evaluation of potential problems relies heavily on customer feedback left on other retail platforms. We’re always the first to stress that no company is 100% perfect, but we’ve put in a good faith effort to accurately represent the most common complaints voiced by Tushy customers who left one, two and three star reviews.

First, it’s important to mention that the majority of Tushy reviews are positive! For example, out of over 6,800 reviews posted to Google Shopping, 85% gave the Tushy Classic five-stars. Similarly, 79% of Amazon reviewers (1,480 total) gave the Tushy Classic five stars. In comparison, only 7% of reviews on Google Shopping and 6% on Amazon rated the product at one or two stars. The bottom line? It appears that most customers were satisfied or extremely satisfied with their purchase.

That said, we were able to identify a few common themes in the lower star reviews. For starters, some customers felt that installation was not as straightforward as advertised or were disappointed to find that the Tushy wasn’t compatible with their toilet. Others reported water leaks, needing additional adaptors or hardware, or difficulty getting the toilet seat to lay properly after installing the Tushy.

  • “The Tushy itself works fine. Installing the Tushy was an awful experience! Tushy sent me other parts to help, but even with them I had MAJOR water leaks when turning the water back on…The customer service team was responsive, but didn’t seem to care that I had to call a plumber who used a special tool.” (Stephanie T., review provided to Google Shopping by HelloTushy)
  • “I really wanted to like this! I’m such a fan of the idea. But the connection is wayyy oversimplified. Modern toilets are often skirted or pushed against the wall and this doesn’t work with that. You need a special adapter. You need special mounting bolts. All of this means in the meantime your toilet is half finished and can’t be used in the meantime…” (Madhan A., review provided to Google Shopping by HelloTushy)
  • “It should come with toilet seat cushions because without them, my toilet seat would break with any weight on it. It makes the toilet seat sit about 2 inches from the toilet bowl.” (Joshua S., Amazon review)
  • “I wanted this to work, but my toilet lid won’t open much. The FAQs suggest buying a new lid. I appreciate the suggestion, but I cannot afford to invest further.” (Karen M., review provided to Google Shopping by HelloTushy)
  • “I liked the ease of installation, however I paid extra to avoid what you see in the picture, notice the gap between the seat and bowl, we snapped our seat within 4 hours of installation…” (Kent T., Amazon review)

A few customers voiced dissatisfaction with their customer service experience. Some wished that there was a way to receive customer support over the phone instead of having to communicate exclusively over email, while others stated that they did not receive support in a timely manner.

  • “I have been emailing them for a whole month to make a return and nothing.” (Julie R., review provided to Google Shopping by HelloTushy)
  • “I tried to contact customer service. There is no number listed. I had to leave a message in writing on their website. A day later I got an automated email from them, which I again had to reply to in writing. Another day has passed since then and I still haven’t heard from a human.” (D.G., Amazon review)
  • “I contacted your Facebook messenger several times, asking for help and then expressing my annoyance that I figured it out on my own and that the customer service wasn’t acceptable. The messages were all seen and none were answered.” (Carolyn D., provided to Google Shopping by HelloTushy)

Lastly, some of the less positive reviews mentioned dissatisfaction with the product’s performance. Some customers felt the wash was so strong that it was uncomfortable, while others said it didn’t get the job done as well as they expected or resulted in water splashing out of the toilet.

  • “To be honest, it’s just okay. I have a very difficult time positioning the nozzle in the right place for effective cleaning. Even then, sometimes it doesn’t seem to do much other than giving me a wet butt. I had high expectations and they definitely weren’t met. The installation was fine, the temperature is fine, the seat is fine. It just doesn’t work nearly as well as I had hoped, especially for the price point and for how long I waited for it to be shipped.” (Zack H.., review provided to Google Shopping by HelloTushy)
  • “There is some splashing that is occurring, on the device and the rim of the toilet. This means I have to wipe it down with toilet paper, which kind of defeats the purpose of using less tp…” (Laura D., review provided to Google Shopping by HelloTushy)
  • “Packaging and marketing are slick (and funny) – but the product feels cheap and the spray is almost painful even at the lowest setting.” (Michael J., review provided to Google Shopping by HelloTushy)
  • “No matter how I sit or adjust my posture, the tushy doesn’t get it all clean. And if I leave any room between my bum and the back of the seat, water sprays up onto the seat lid!” (Rachel S., review provided to Google Shopping by HelloTushy)

We feel like it’s worth mentioning that the company’s FAQ section does offer solutions to some of the issues mentioned by customers who left low reviews. Even so, some of these fixes require spending extra money for hardware or adaptors, and so it’s worth emailing Tushy a photo of your toilet prior to purchasing an attachment to minimize the chances of having a surprise issue with fit or installation.

All in all, the high level of positive customer feedback suggests that if you’re looking for a no-frills, inexpensive introduction to bidet cleansing, a Tushy bidet attachment is a solid option. Even so, the fact that Tushy bidets are non-electric means you’ll miss out on some of the comforts and conveniences provided by electric units, such as warm air drying, a warm seat, varying spray options, and a built-in water heater. If you want more bidet features than what’s offered on Tushy attachments, we recommend checking out these great alternatives (click on the name to see the product listing).
