Have you ever been jolted awake after sitting down on an ice cold toilet seat? It’s unpleasant and makes it hard to loosen up and go. Heated toilet seats solve this problem! Whether you’re using the bathroom in the middle of the night or during the day, a heated toilet seat cradles your rear in a warm embrace so you can do your business in comfort.

What to Know Before You Buy a Heated Toilet Seat

Toilet Shape

Toilet bowls come in a round or elongated shape. A heated toilet seat must match the shape of your bowl in order to have a secure fit. Most toilets have an elongated bowl, so almost all heated toilet seats come in an elongated seat size. Though round bowls are less common, many heated toilet seats also come in a round size.

On most toilets, the space between the tank and the bowl forms a right angle. Some toilets, however, have a distinct curve in this spot known as a French Curve. French curves can make it difficult to install some heated toilet seats, especially those with bidet features. If you have a French curve toilet, please reach out to us before purchasing a seat!

Electrical Requirements

All heated toilet seats require a GFCI electrical outlet. Most seats have a 3.5-4 ft cord, so the outlet needs to be within that distance of the toilet. If there’s no outlet nearby, you may want to have one installed by an electrician. Installing an outlet varies in price by location, but some estimate the average cost to be between $200 and $275.

You can also use an extension cord as long as it meets three criteria. It must be 14-gauge, have three prongs, and be raised off the floor where the cords meet. Since extension cords pose a trip hazard, they’re not an ideal solution. To minimize the trip hazard, consider routing it through a vanity, along a baseboard, or over a doorway.

Heated toilet seats without a bidet use less power than those with a bidet built in. A bidet seat’s power draw depends on the type of water heater it has. At peak, one of these units might use between 600 watts and 1400 watts. Manufacturers know that even a small energy draw adds up over time, so most bidet seats offer an energy saving mode.

Features, Settings & Price

In general, the more features a heated toilet seat has, the more deluxe the experience and the happier the bottom.

The most basic heated toilet seats are simple and sweet, offering a warm sitting space and little else. Some might come with a nightlight, adjustable temperature settings and slow close lid, but that’s about it. These usually cost $200 or less.

Other heated toilet seats come with a built in bidet that delivers warm water washing for a truly luxurious bathroom experience. These usually include extra features like nozzle oscillation, pulse spray, air dryer, night light, scentless deodorizer, user presets, nozzle sterilization or even an auto open/close lid. Heated toilet seats with bidet cleansing cost anywhere from $250 to over $1000.
